History of Humble, Texas

Humble was not always the center of activity, and the city was not named for the Humble Oil and Refining Company.  Mr. Pleasant Humble began operating a ferry across the San Jacinto River in the mid-1800's.  Mr. Humble served as just of the peace, and in 1886, he opened a post office.  The "town" was then officially known as Humble.

In the early 1900's, shallow oil production was started in the area.  A big oil discovery turned Humble into a tent city, and as oil exploration continued to return amazing results, the oil fields there were the largest producers in Texas.  A group of local entrepreneurs formed the Humble Oil and Refining Company, which is now known as ExxonMobil.

After the oil production in the area began to decline, the city took on a quiet small town atmosphere.  When the new Intercontinental Airport opened in 1969, Humble and the surrounding area experienced a significant growth spurt.  In response, the number of businesses and retail locations in Humble also grew.  Today, Humble is a center of activity in Harris County, Texas.

There are a number of unique parks in the area, also.  They include the Mercer Arboretum & Botanic Gardens, Jesse H. Jones Park and Nature Center, and the Mountasia Family Fun Center.

The Humble Independent School District offers outstanding education to kindergarten through 12th grade students.
